Bloodstain Pattern Analysis

01 Overview

With an emphasis on hands-on training, this course teaches the uses and limitations of bloodstain patterns as they relate to violent crime analysis. In this 40-hour course, students will learn how to properly identify and document basic types of bloodstain patterns. After covering history, fundamentals of bloodstain principles, and theories of bloodstain formations, students will apply these principles in simulated crime scenes and laboratory exercises. By the end of this 40-hour course, students should be able to:

  • Describe presumptive testing techniques for blood spatter
  • Test falling distances, surface textures, and drop volume with real blood
  • Use stain measurements and impact stains to locate the position where the blood originated
  • Identify blood in motion, swipes, wipes, transfers, and drip trails
  • Document, collect and package blood evidence
Over 60% of the course will be hands-on practical applications. Students will train in our dedicated blood spatter rooms, recording their findings with guidance from the instructor. Students will follow up their initial findings with comprehensive laboratory exercises.

05 Who Should Take This Course

Prerequisites: None
Course Length: 40-Hours
Level: Beginner to Intermediate

This training session is designed for law enforcement, crime scene technicians, and laboratory personnel with limited experience analyzing bloodstain evidence. Lawyers and state attorneys also benefit by having a better understanding of how to present BPA in court.
The course teaches basic to intermediate applications and is intended for new and limited on-the-job students. Advanced BPA training is offered in a separate course.

07 Special Considerations

Please wear appropriate work attire with closed toes shoes as this is a hands-on class. Please bring any equipment your agency is used to working with (i.e. cameras, tripods, etc.).
